VISITOR ATTRACTIONS We have our own "Neolithic Stone circle" just beside the farm and this makes a nice walk on a summers evening. Glenquicken farm has its own trout fishery and guests can avail of preferential rates to fish the lochan there are trout to double figures in the lochan and it makes for exciting fishing and the trout are ideal for the BBQ. Click here to view details of the Trout Fishery.
Fly fishing tuition is available to our guests (time permitting) and this usually results in a catch. We also have our own Pheasantry on site and guests are welcome especially the junior ones to help collect eggs (in season) and to observe the progression from the incubator to the hatchery and then to the rearing field. |
DRIVEN PHEASANT AND PARTRIDGE DAYS For further details and available dates:
Our own shoot is nearby on the Cairnsmore estate (This was the Estate immortalised in Buchans book The 39 Steps) and sometimes a days rough shooting can be available to guests or possibly an accompanied outing in search for the elusive deer with your camera or with the stalkers can be arranged (subject to availability). The Cairnsmore estate is designated an area of (Special Scientific Interest (ASSI) and is at the top of the list of New Donalds in terms of height of its rock face and spectacular cliff faces.
Clay pigeon shooting can be arranged on an informal basis (time permitting) and at a small cost on the farm. Tuition is available free to our guests. We are of course very close to some of the major salmon and sea trout fishing in South West Scotland and permits can normally be arranged locally for these rivers. We have three golf courses within a 10-mile radius and they are open for visitors throughout the year. We are very fortunate to be close to the Galloway Forest Park where the "Seven Stanes" mountain bike trails are located and also the National Cycle route number 7. Cycle tracks abound in the area and the "Old Paddy Line" railway bed has been converted to form a safe cycling environment for all the family. This narrow gauge line originally ran to the Irish ferry ports of Stranraer and Portpatrick. If you want to go off-road by foot there are numerous marked forest walks and of course the Southern Upland Way is close by. |
